The Wind Up!
A single middle-aged man at the beach is forced to let go of his cautious OCD issues as the wind blows him to his destiny – a close encounter with his dream woman.
Challenge
I wanted to do a 3 or 4 min short with no or very little dialogue so it would be internationally appealing. This idea came to me after seeing a funny moment of someone chasing their parasol on the beach. Apart from seeming potentially dangerous, it was also comical to see that every time the girl got close and slowed down, it blew off again.
Idea
The idea deals with letting go of trying to control the world, as sometimes nature knows best, and you never know where it will take you.
A middle-aged man arrives at the beach and puts his towel down. He is very meticulous in folding his clothes, and putting his suncream on, taking time to rub it in between his toes. He avoids any direct contact with the sand and dusts off any grains that stick to the sun cream bottle. There is a light breeze which blows the corner of his towel up, irritating him, but he finds some small stones to solve the problem.
He sets up his parasol, and takes out a book – it´s a self help book about confidence with women. Noticing that the beach is full of couples, he sighs and tries to read, but he can’t concentrate on the book and so he decides to go for a swim. He removes his sunhat and glasses and carefully places them in his bag, before walking backwards to the water, never taking his eyes off his bag for more than a few seconds. We see him treading water and swimming a little but then retracing his spot on the beach to check his bag is still safe.
After the swim, the wind has picked up. We see a beach ball whizzing past. He stands around trying to dry off in the wind but then decides to change out of his wet shorts. He looks around sheepishly and pulls out a second clean towel from his bag. He wraps it around his waist and begins to try and lower his wet shorts inside. On one leg he struggles to keep his balance as a gust of wind blows his towel open. He quickly swivels around to avoid two old ladies seeing his modesty. The wind is now really starting to blow and some people are packing up to leave.
Having got the wet shorts off he looks for his plastic bag to put them in when another gust blows his towel wide open like a superman cape. Luckily a paper coffee cup lands over his family jewels. In panic he lets go of his shorts and pulls in the towel. The pages off his book are flapping in the wind, and he sees his bag is getting covered in sand. Increasingly stressed, he crouches to try and sort it out but suddenly his parasol takes off at 100 mph, spinning and tumbling down the beach. It seems like it could impale anyone at any second so he drops everything and starts to run in pursuit of this dangerous weapon.
Jumping over sunbathers and dodging kids, he´s desperate to reach it before it does any damage. Some people watch as it whips-by but most people have their eyes closed as they take in the sun’s rays. Every time he gets within a few paces he slows down but it’s a false victory as it takes off again, rolling and flipping over the sand. By now he has traveled a good distance but he finally gets hold of the pole and stands catching his breath when a violent blast of wind lifts him up into the air. He flies high but dips down again and is dragged across the sand. A woman nearby looks on in concern and grabs his leg to try and help but she is small and slim and is also taken upwards with the sheer force of the wind.
They both look a little scared as they are lifted higher and higher, but the man pulls her up to the top so she´s more secure. Eventually they start to enjoy the view as the parasol is now gliding quite gracefully. He notices that she´s actually quite attractive and starts to smile. They make eye contact and she giggles, but then he feels his towel coming undone. He instinctively goes to grab it, but he can´t hold on with just one hand. He has an initial look of panic, but then looks at the girl and releases a relaxed grin and we see the towel blowing away. The girl smiles, without looking down, and they float off slowly into the sunset.
